IFSR Serves at 2019 World Jamboree at Summit, WV, USA
More than 45,000 Scouts from 169 national Scout groups took part in the World Scout Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve near Glen Jean, WV, USA. They spent nearly 2 weeks learning different cultures as well as sharing the principles of the Scouting movement. When these 45,000 Scouts are combined with the 9,000 members of the volunteer International Service Team, the Summit Bechtel Reserve became the largest city in West Virginia, larger than Charlestown which has a population of 48,000. The photo on the left show these 45,000 Scouts at the opening ceremony.
The jamboree was hosted jointly by the Boy Scouts of America, Scouts Canada, and Asociación de Scouts de México. With its six base camps, nine adventure areas, and various administrative areas, the jamboree encompassed 21 square miles (13,440 acres) of forested hills atop the New River Gorge if West Virginia. There were restaurants representing Canada, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America serving visitors and staff.
The Secretary-General of the World Organization of the Scouting Movement presided and welcomed Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney who visited. This is the second time the US hosted the World Jamboree. The first time was in 1967 in Farragut State Park in Idaho. 12,011 attended then. This is not the largest world jamboree. The 1929 World Jamboree in the UK is thought to have hosted 50,000 Scouts.
IFSR World President, Mark Kriebel, had the privilege of serving as master of ceremonies for the World Scout Jamboree Rotary meeting. Mark Maloney (left), Rotary International President, surprised Mark with the "Silver Wheel" award, the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians service award. Mark was impressed with the enthusiastic reception given to Mark and his aide Larry Lunsford. Rotary and Scouting make a real difference in lives worldwide!
As is the tradition, the IFSR held a meeting of IFSR members attending the World Jamboree. The following photo show Ri President Mark Maloney addressing the trememdous turnout of IFSR members:

The BSA National Jamboree hosted over 30,000 in 2017, including more than 1000 international Scouts, leaders, and staff. It included an IFSR booth in the Faith and Beliefs Area at Summit Center at the BSA Summit located near Beckley, West Virginia.
Our booth was chaired by Angus and Susan McFarlane of Ada, Oklahoma, and we certainly applaud then for “stepping up” to again chair this important Rotary outreach to Scouts and Scouters. Special patches and pins were produced under the able supervision of our past IAR Chair Dan O’Brien, and we’re sure that the patch will become a real collector’s item! Those who contributed to the cost of booth at the $50 level received a special patch.
Individuals who are interested in being more involved with our Fellowship should send an email to Dan O’Brien, InterAmerican Chair, at
. Be sure to put Rotary or Fellowship in the subject line so it doesn’t “get lost in the mail.” If you have a specific role in mind, share it. Elections take place at the annual InterAmerican Region Meeting. Offices begin on July 1, with the rest of the Rotary world.
Spreading the word about the fellowship, helping to strengthen the relationship between Rotary, Boy Scout Organizations, as well as Girl Scouts and Girl Guides and helping all three organizations grow is what we are all about. Promoting the fellowship at PETS, Zone meetings and Scouting functions always needs help and interested volunteers.
